17 WEEK RYA YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE / OCEAN COURSE
(MCA approved and commercially endorsed)

Aim
The aim of the 17 week RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Course is to take the novice yachtsman or woman, and expose them to a series of training modules that will culminate in the students qualifying as confident and practically competent skippers with commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean Certificates (Celestial Navigation).

Why do the 17 week course with 2KO and OSA?

The Academy feels that we can offer a course that excels in establishing a solid base of confidence and practical ability in all our students, for taking on the responsibilities of a commercial skipper. We feel we can achieve this through the following:

The Instructors
Notable yachtsmen who have been seasoned by the South African coastlines demand for ability and skill. The principal and chief instructor of the Academy, Robbie Dove, is a well-known local yachtsman, who in addition to holding the local SAS Yachtmaster Ocean Instructor certificate, is also a Yachtmaster Ocean Instructor for both the RYA and the ASA, and one of the three RYA Examiners appointed by the RYA to examine in South Africa. He is an avid racing skipper claiming regular wins in the South African blue water racing calendar and has cruised more than 180 000 nm through the Indian, Southern and Atlantic oceans in addition to the Caribbean and Mediterranean. Robbie’s wealth of knowledge and experience has been utilised in the structuring of the 17 week programme which he believes will methodically instil the skills and more importantly confidence to become a well informed, capable and safe skipper.

Our instructors include both ASA and RYA certified Yachtmaster Instructors who are familiar with the variable weather conditions off the South African coastline, having learned to sail in these waters. They are well aware of the importance of sailing safely with so few protected bays to shelter in, and the students will be able to benefit from their experience and knowledge of sailing in strong winds and big seas.

It is an often discussed matter, that if you can master this coastline, you will be able to sail safely anywhere in the world!

Exam Preparation Program:

The most effective way to prepare for an exam is to do one! Realising this, we have incorporated the RYA Coastal Skipper external exam into the 17 week program to help prepare the students for the final Yachtmaster exam. This has given our students an enormous advantage for the following reasons:

a. the students experience first hand the stress and pressures of the exam situation, which assists them in being mentally prepared for the next exam, the RYA Yachmaster Offshore.

b. “Forewarned is forearmed” – the students are made aware of the standards that will be expected of them and also gain valuable insight into the structure of an exam.

c. the students will be “familiar” with the routine of an exam and will be more relaxed due to there being fewer surprises.

d. Any “weak” areas in a students sailing abilities will become apparent in this exam, and they will then have time to work on these before attempting the yachtmaster exam.

Training boats
Basic training starts on Lavranos 34 ft yachts, which are hardy and reliable yachts originally designed by Angelo Lavranos to withstands the rugged conditions off the South Africa coastline. Following on from these yachts, the students progress onto the more luxurious Bavaria 36 ft boats and ultimately onto the Leisure 42, the latest performance cruiser from the designing board of Alec Simonis, well known international naval architect. The students benefit from learning to handle a “high tech” design , as many of the charter boats they will be working on overseas are comparable to this calibre of yacht. This design is also particularly fast moving downwind and is guaranteed to provide some really testing big boat handling and always exhilarating surfing!.

Solo Sail
On satisfactorily passing the RYA Coastal Skipper exam and becoming qualified skippers, the students will be given the task of safely delivering their yacht to a number of local ports and marinas without the instructor aboard. One of the traits an examiner expects to see in a potential yachtmaster is leadership abilities, and this exercise gives the students the opportunity of developing these skills further by letting them take charge, make decisions and delegate duties whilst getting the yacht safely from A to B.

So….…why do the course in South Africa?

In addition to our hot summers and relatively mild winters, the South African coastline provides some of the most challenging sailing in the world, and below is a brief description of the different sailing conditions that produces truly confident yachtsmen and women. Fair weather sailing is not always an option here and any sailing off this coastline necessitates some knowledge of heavy weather sailing.

Cape Town and Surrounding Waters
The Cape waters are famous for the meeting of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and is considered the fairest cape of them all. The water is a lot colder in the Cape with the average temperature being around 17ºC, and the prevailing winds NW and SE, with the SE winds creating the spectacular tablecloth effect on top of Table Mountain. These alternating winds provide a variety of sailing conditions from calm to gale force, sometimes all in one day and the students learn to cope with these changing conditions. Langebaan on the West Coast is very similar to the Solent and ideal for RYA training, and considerable time is spent here during the early stages of training as well as later on in the program when the students are preparing for their final external RYA exams.

Cape Town / Durban/Cape Town
This part of the course is used to give each student the opportunity to be skipper for a leg, which includes taking on all the responsibilities and decision making accompanying this position. They will have to manage the crew and vessel through adverse conditions including fog and variable weather. Additional responsibilities include pilotage, passage planning, maintaining watch systems and ongoing maintenance.

The passage from Cape Town to Durban is divided into the following legs (in reverse on the way back):

Cape Town - False Bay
False Bay - Knysna
Knysna – Port Elizabeth
Port Elizabeth – East London
East London- Durban

Each leg will include the drawing up and the filing of a flight plan with the port authorities, and preparing the crew and boat for each leg.

Some of the ports en route offer the most spectacular scenic anchorages and local points of interest eg: Knysna, Storms River Mouth, and Tsitsikama Forest, – home of the Knysna elephant. The entrance into the Knysna Lagoon tests even the most experienced yachtsmen, and this will only be attempted if weather conditions are suitable. The ruggedly beautiful coastline between East London and Durban, affectionately known as the Wild Coast, is relatively open offering little protection between ports. When the weather changes, there is nowhere to hide, and the students learn to cope with adverse seas, whilst still being expected to perform watch keeping duties, navigation and other tasks like helping keep the crew warm with hot drinks and food!

On the return trip to Cape Town, the common route is to head offshore out of sight of land in order to benefit from the southerly flowing current, and is blue water cruising at its best

Durban and Surrounding Waters
Durban is situated 31º S, characterised by a subtropical climate and moderate to strong coastal winds, alternating from the North East and South West. The closest port to the North of Durban is Richards Bay (86 nm) away, followed by Maputo (220nm from Richard’s Bay), and to the South, East London (250nm). The warm Mozambican current flows in a southerly direction at speeds varying between 2 and 5 knots, becoming the Agulhas current further south towards Cape Agulhas.

Dive course
Due to the nature of the charter industry, it is an enormous advantage when seeking employment to be able to sail and dive. The Ocean students have the opportunity to begin extending their skills into diving or to better any diving qualifications they already have.
A 5-day dive course will be conducted from Umkomaas, the launch site to world renowned Aliwal Shoal, breeding grounds of the “Raggie” (Ragged Tooth Shark). Those with existing diving qualifications have the choice of the Advanced/Rescue diving course or, joining those not wanting to dive in a relaxing week on the beach or take an independent break. All diving equipment, namely mask, snorkels and fins, wet suits, tanks and BC’s are provided by the dive company. You will be accommodated in the dive lodge where breakfast and dinner is provided (extra dives and meals are at your own expense).

STCW ’95 courses
STCW ’95 stands for Standards Of Training, Crewing and Watch Keeping, revised in 1995 at an International Maritime Organisation convention. In the past these standards only applied to merchant shipping, but now, the possession of at least the 3 listed below is compulsory for obtaining employment at any level on commercial vessels i.e. First Aid, Fire Fighting and PSSR (Personal Safety and Social Responsibility).
