The focus is on both incident and process trauma.

Incident Trauma is where there was a critical incident/event. It is an event outside the range of usual human experience that has the potential to easily overcome a person's normal ability to cope with stress. It may produce a negative psychological response in a person who was involved in or witnessed such an incident.

Process Trauma is any event where the trauma occurs over a period of time.

Process Trauma includes but is not limited to:

  • Divorce

  • Child Abuse

  • Loss (work, significant other, pet ect).

The Current Situation: The aim of this phase is to explore and clarify the issue the individual brings to the session in other words the individual has to describe the overall problem situation. This normally takes place during the first session and at the beginning of subsequent sessions.

The Preferred Situation: The purpose of this phase is to help the individual see the “bigger picture” and to set goals to work with. It is also to help the individual generate more objective perspectives to solve the problem.

Action Plan: The goal of this phase is to start putting plans into action. Determining how to implement goals and then working towards reaching it is the core purpose of this phase.
