Tummy Tuck in Cape Town, South Africa (stomach surgery)

A Tummy Tuck is a cosmetic surgery procedure that corrects a loose, protruding or sagging abdomen and creates a flatter, tighter abdominal profile. This is not the same procedure as Liposuction.

In Cape Town, the tummy tuck procedure involves the surgical removal of excess abdominal fat and skin. It may also include tightening of the abdominal wall where muscles have weakened. The incisions are at or just above the pubic area. A Tummy Tuck is generally performed as an outpatient procedure under general anaesthesia, or local anaesthesia with sedation by a prominent surgeon in Cape Town.

A Tummy Tuck may be performed in conjunction with Liposuction to remove adjacent areas of excess fat. Where excess skin or weakened muscles are not factors, liposuction alone is an alternative.
Swelling subsides and initial results appear in 2-4 weeks. Final results appear in 8 weeks. Flattening and fading of incision lines continue for one year after a Cape Town tummy tuck

General information on a 'tummy tuck'
When you have a tummy tuck the upper abdomen's skin is tightened, while the lower abdomen's excess skin is removed and tightened after excess fat has been removed. Removing the excess skin from the lower abdomen is also helpful to remove stretch marks that may be present in that region.

The incisions for a tummy tuck are done around your bikini line and in most cases around your belly button as well.

The inner girdle (fascia) that we refer to above runs from your ribcage down to your pubic bone across the entire abdominal area and is there to support the contents of your abdomen. If you have a hernia, it refers to a hole or tear in this girdle.

During pregnancy this girdle stretches to accommodate the growing foetus and although your muscle tone can be brought back to pre-pregnancy state with regular exercising, the girdle is not always that resilient
.

Limitations of a tummy tuck A tummy tuck will not remove stretch marks from your upper or middle abdomen nor will it remove thick fat from your upper abdomen. Have a tummy tuck done only when you have finished childbearing, as the next pregnancy will have exactly the same effect on your inner girdle. When you are having a tummy tuck, but are also plagued by "saddle bags" around your hips, consider having them attended to at the same time, otherwise your hips will be even more prominent.

Notes on a tummy tuck
"Dog ears" may form after the surgical wound has healed, and are puckers at either end of the scar and normally appear if you had very loose skin that had to be tightened. This is easily corrected and most plastic surgeons perform this correction in their rooms. The incision scars will be visible for some time, but are normally hidden by your bathing costume and underwear. Depending on how well your body heals, the scars may fade to almost unnoticeable. Medical insurance (also called medical aid schemes in some countries) does not normally cover the cost of a tummy tuck, unless a hernia has to be attended to, when they may cover that portion of the procedure. It is better to discuss this beforehand with your medical insurance.
